What is Chaos?Good question! Chaos is a fun little game. In the Fall of 2000, we ended one of our meetings by playing Chaos, and we loved it so much we now end every meeting by playing the game.
Ooh, sounds cool! How do you play?Good question! Each person picks a whole number, in other words, 1, 2, ... (no fractions). The object of the game is to have the lowest number that nobody else picks. That's it! At our meetings, everyone thinks of a number in their head, and we go around the room with each person saying what the number was. We go by the honor system; we trust people not to change their number. Because we're all good people. :)
Simple yet complicated! There must be lots of strategy!Oh, don't you know it! The lower the number you pick, the better chance you have of it being the lowest number. But everyone else is thinking the same thing, so there's a higher chance of that number being a duplicate. And it also depends a lot on how big a group you're playing with. One guy at our meetings, we'll call him "Dan Clark," always picks 1. And each time we know he's going to pick 1, so for him not to win, someone else has to pick 1 too. But if that someone else picks 1, (s)he loses, because it's a duplicate! So we're all counting on someone else to sacrifice themself for everyone else. And that doesn't always happen, "Dan" has won at least a few times. Things like that are part of what make the game so fun.
